Why Provision at Lefkada?

Lefkada Marina has a Lidl supermarket 800m away (10-minute walk). It’s cheaper, better stocked, and less stressful than trying to provision at island shops later.

This guide covers what to buy, where to buy it, and realistic costs for a week.

Where to Shop

Location: 800m from marina (10-minute walk)
Hours: 08:00-21:00 Mon-Sat, 09:00-20:00 Sun
Why: Cheapest prices, full selection, familiar brands

How to get there:

  1. Exit marina, turn left
  2. Walk along main road 800m
  3. Lidl on right side (large blue/yellow sign)

Pro tip: Bring a trolley if you have lots to carry, or grab a taxi back (€5-8).

AB Vassilopoulos

Location: 1.2km from marina
Hours: 08:00-21:00 daily
Why: Larger Greek supermarket chain, more expensive than Lidl but bigger selection

What NOT to Buy

Skip these (either not needed or better bought elsewhere):

  • Fresh fish (buy at island villages daily — fresher)
  • Frozen meals (limited freezer space)
  • Heavy glass bottles (buy plastic/cans where possible)
  • Exotic ingredients (stick to simple meals)
  • Too much fresh meat (limited fridge space)

Sample 7-Day Meal Plan

This balances cooking onboard (cheaper) with eating at tavernas (experience).

Day 1 (Saturday): Dinner onboard (late check-in, tired from travel)
→ Pasta with jarred sauce, salad

Day 2: Lunch onboard, dinner at taverna
→ Lunch: Sandwiches, Dinner: Taverna

Day 3: Lunch onboard, dinner onboard
→ Lunch: Bread/cheese/salad, Dinner: Grilled chicken with vegetables

Day 4: Lunch onboard, dinner at taverna
→ Lunch: Tuna salad, Dinner: Taverna

Day 5: Lunch onboard, dinner at taverna
→ Lunch: Sandwiches, Dinner: Taverna (fresh fish)

Day 6: Lunch onboard, dinner onboard
→ Lunch: Pasta salad, Dinner: Risotto

Day 7 (Friday): Lunch onboard, dinner at taverna
→ Lunch: Leftovers, Dinner: Final taverna meal

Taverna Budget

Average cost: €20-30 per person including drinks

Budget for 3-4 taverna dinners: €240-480 for 4 people

Tip: Fresh fish is expensive (€40-50/kg) but worth it 1-2 nights. Greek salads, grilled meats, and moussaka are excellent value (€8-15 per dish).

Storage Tips

Fridge space is limited:

  • Use UHT milk (doesn’t need fridge until opened)
  • Buy fresh meat only for first 2-3 days
  • Keep beer/wine in coolbox with ice from marina
  • Use ice blocks (freeze water bottles overnight)

Dry storage:

  • Under-seat lockers for cans, dry goods
  • Hanging nets for fresh fruit
  • Sealed containers for bread (keeps fresh, protects from moisture)

Water

Tank capacity: 150-200 liters (typical 40ft yacht)

Usage: 150-200 liters per person per week

What this means: Fill tank at marina before departure, top up at every harbor. You won’t run out if you refill regularly.

Gas

Usually included in charter. One bottle lasts 1-2 weeks of cooking. If you cook heavily (3 meals/day onboard), you might need a refill (€20-30 at island shops).

Final Costs Summary

For 4 people, 7 days:

  • Supermarket provisions: €260-330
  • Taverna dinners (3-4 nights): €240-480
  • Total food/drink: €500-810
  • Per person: €125-200

This is realistic for a balanced week of onboard cooking + taverna meals.

Pro Tips

  1. Arrive Friday: Provision leisurely Friday afternoon, no rush
  2. Freeze water bottles: Makes ice blocks for cooler
  3. Buy ice at marina: €2-3 per bag if needed
  4. Restock at Nidri: If you run short, Nidri (near Meganisi) has supermarkets
  5. Don’t overbuy fresh: You’ll eat at tavernas more than you think
  6. Bring reusable bags: Greek supermarkets charge for bags

Provisioning properly at Lefkada saves money and stress. You’ll arrive at your first anchorage fully stocked and ready to relax.
